I follow a number of blogs and company websites and I enjoy seeing how they evolve over time.

There may be a slight change to the style or size of the font, more images may have been added, or the owner may have made it much simpler and easier to read. The content may change, too. As one’s interests or business direction evolves, so does their list of services.

I generally find that the most successful sites take a less is more approach to their structure and design. People are generally inclined to make their websites more complicated than they need to be. There’s a fine line between too little and too much.

The fact that people are experimenting is what’s important because they are constantly seeking to find what works. This is one of the fun things about blogging. Over the course of month, I’ll touch on a wide variety of subjects to see what sticks and what doesn’t. Some posts will get attention, and others not. During a week of writing, I may have one blog post that I feel is good writing.

When I take a stream of consciousness approach, the writing just seems to flow, and these posts just get more attention. A meticulously crafted post, looking back, sometimes comes across as too mechanical.

The evolution of a site can also take a wrong turn. A person may stop writing or a company may go out of business. Whatever the reason, at least they tried to make something happen. Figuring out what works and what doesn’t is not an easy task.
